MUSICAL TALENT HUNT SHOWS: A MIRAGE?

Getting competitors to re-enact songs that have made their marks is not the best approach to assess and score their musical ability or talent. Anyone can perform a song that has generated or created its own appeal or “a winning blueprint”. All it takes is to imitate the singer’s voice and delivery pattern.

This ideology only allows a competitor to reproduce a song; note by note and tone by tone without any form of originality, and real talent being exhibited. Whoever reproduces better, automatically wins the competition. I want to believe this is a far cry from intended objective(s). The act of “copy, paste and display” will no way bring out the best talented  competitor; it only re-echoes originality done by someone else. In other words, what they do in real sense is miming to songs. This can be likened to a chef who went for a cooking competition and dishes out already cooked or prepared meal, and is expected to be scored on that, to judge his culinary skills. Is this not an irony? We should put a stop to this practise.
“The act of copy, paste and display will no way bring out the best talented  competitor”

This is why in most cases, on the scale of one to ten, eight says the eventual winners don’t turn out as expected after the competition. They either fade out or are not heard of at all, afterwards. At most they end up as copy right artists.

l strongly disagree with this pattern of talent hunting, and advocate for assessment based on originality from the competitors. I am looking forward to a competition where participants would compose and perform their own songs. This ideology will breed talents that will last the test of time. It sure, will.

My Proposal: this is simply a suggestion which could be improved upon. I am looking at a process that will merge three competitions in one with the sole aim of producing originality and showcasing raw gifted talents. At each level of the competition, all short listed participants including those that will make it to the grand finale will receive intensive technical training tailored to enhance their specific skills for growth and better output.
At the first stage, gifted song writers are given the task of writing fresh songs; entries will be received on at least five (5) genres. These genres could be classified as R&B, Afro Beats, Religious, Rap and Acapella.  The best lyrics are picked from each genres.
The second stage will concentrate on short listing talented producers. The top five (5) lyrics, one from each genres, picked at the first stage will be produced by the upcoming talented producers. The best produced song is picked from each genres and presented at the third stage.
Moreover, the third stage is where short listed talented singers perform the produced songs. For emphasis, these songs are original and have never been sang or performed by anyone. The participant are scored on their performance of each genres to accumulate points. The participant with the highest scored point wins.
The bottom line is that winners are genuinely picked based on originality, creativity and raw untapped talents. When we say, “Musical Talent Hunt”, it should be all encompassing not only for singers.
